…. Edith Piaf would have been 100 years old.
It was as a schoolgirl, listening to her voice in our ‘Cercle Français’ – the only extra-curricular activity in which I willingly participated – that I fell in love with the idea of living in France.
That voice still gives me cold shivers and makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up, and although she is best-known for ‘La Vie en Rose’, ‘Non, Je ne Regrette Rien’ and ‘Milord’, this is still my favourite, sung in duet with her second husband, Théo Sarapo, who as well as being spectacularly handsome also had a beautiful voice. Beside him she looked like a tiny doll.
I love this film so much, the way they look at each other and the way you can see they truly mean the words they are singing. For those who don’t understand French, here is an English translation of the lyrics.
A year after this, Edith was dead, and sadly Théo was killed in a car crash seven years later, not far from here.
Any other Piaf fans out there?
