Caught between the devil and HMRC

Today the British press reports on a threat to the officers of Her Majesty’s Constabulary.

Following the phone hacking scandal and revelations that certain gentleman in blue uniforms with shiny buttons accepted illegal payments from journalists in exchange for information, the ever-vigilant Customs and Revenue will be scrutinising self-assessment returns of possible beneficiaries.

Payments, whether legal or illegal, received in connection with one’s employment, are equally taxable. Accepting illegal payments is one thing. Failing to declare them is a second thing. Oh dear.

Are any of the boys in blue shaking in their No. 14s, I wonder. 🙂
