The Spanish Inquisition is alive and well

With sincere apologies to all those normal, civilised Spanish people who abhor the sadism of their fellow countrymen and the shame it brings to their country.

The Spanish Inquisition started in the late 15th Century. In Spain, of course.

It lasted for nearly four hundred years.

Probably the name best known in respect of the Inquisition is that kindly old monk, Torquemada.

Probably the two words most synonymous with the Spanish Inquisition are persecution and torture.

Victims were “questioned” in ingenious ways. Crushed, squashed, stretched, boiled, roasted, flayed, scraped, ripped, twisted, dangled …. there were many ways to make the last days of their life as excruciating, and their death as protracted, as possible.

You could say, I suppose, that the Spanish elevated torture to an art form.

Well, guess what? It’s still going on! Yes! Flourishing in the 21st century.

But the victims of this unspeakable barbarism are no longer Jews or those regarded as heretics. Now they are dogs.

Not vicious, powerful, aggressive dogs, but dogs with the gentle nature of Bambi, trusting, limpid eyed, obedient, wanting only to please.

These are the Spanish greyhounds, also known as Galgos, used by Spanish hunters known as galguerros. Abused by them. Ritually tortured by them in ways equally as inhumane as those once used upon people.

WARNING: DO NOT GOOGLE “GALGO IMAGES” UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE PHYSICALLY ILL AND HAUNTED FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE.

This is what a healthy Galgo should look like:

I am not going to go into graphic detail here. Many people would rather not know, and I hate having vile, sickening images popping up unexpectedly, unavoidably. For those interested in knowing more about the treatment of the Galgos, and their smaller companions the Podencos, you could visit  http://www.galgonews.com/ and learn about the fate of the dogs, and the efforts of those fighting to defend them in the face of a Spanish government who seem to be doing fuck-very-little to stop the practices of their hunters.

One of the organisations working in the front line, in Spain, rescuing, caring for and rehoming the dogs is called Scooby Medina. They are currently caring for more than 500. Like most of us they are feeling the effects of the economic climate, and their situation is critical. Without financial assistance, without people adopting the dogs, they will fold by the end of the year.

We can’t all help financially, we can’t all offer a home, but we can, all of us, spread the word amongst our friends, worldwide to raise support and assistance for Scooby Medina, fighting the battle of good versus evil. And to let people know what happens in that country of sangria, sunshine, sombreros, the Alhambra.  All those glorious tourist attractions.

Rewards

I don’t know about you, but when I categorise people I sort them into two types: “Givers – positive people” and “Takers – negative people”. Colour, gender or social status don’t interest me.

One of my special friends is a lady is going through a very difficult time emotionally and financially. As well as her children and family pets, she provides shelter, food and love for a number of abandoned and abused dogs which she is fostering. Being a Giver, she copes by simply taking on more work than one person should be able to manage, and continues providing the love and care that is asked of her by those around her. Although she would deny it, she is a very remarkable person, not only stunning to look at, but with the most outstanding bosoms this side of Dolly Parton, and if she reads this, she’ll recognise herself.

Joanna, this rose is just for you

As well as her spirit, I love her sense of humour. Today, she sends me a lesson in female multiplication:

Whatever you give a woman, she’s going to multiply.

If you give her sperm, she’ll give you a baby.

If you give her a house, she’ll give you a home.

If you give her groceries, she’ll give you a meal.

If you give her a smile, she’ll give you her heart.

She multiplies and enlarges what is given to her.’

So – if you give her crap, you will receive more shit than any one human being can handle.

:-)

One last thing: if you have room in your heart and hearth for two elderly Spanish greyhounds, currently fostered by Joanna, they may just be prepared to surrender their place on her sofa to come and fill your life with love and joy. Urgent Help needed for Galgos in Andalucia

April and Paul CarrierThe following letter has been received from April and Paul Carrier, right, at the Alpha Dog Centre:

“We have worked for 8 years rehabilitating and preparing small groups of 10 to 20 Spanish Galgos for adoption. We have been spared the reality of the desperate day-to-day struggle undergone by dedicated and caring individuals like Saskia and Juan the veterianarian, who spend the bulk of their lives working to help abandoned Galgos and many other dogs of all shapes and sizes at their shelter.

They are on the ‘front line’, seeing and experiencing the abandonment of galgos and other dogs on a scale hard to imagine.

This morning Paul went to visit their shelter, Acogida de San Anton in Villamartin, Andalucia, to collect another galga. He found Saskia and Juan sad and beginning to lose hope – they currently have in their care around 70 Galgos, and 125 other dogs.

Every day on average another 10 dogs are brought or left tied to their gate. That’s in the region of 70 dogs a week.

They can no longer cope with the numbers of dogs, and find themselves in a terrible situation – they must euthanise any and all newcomers, healthy or not, young or old, pure breed or mixed breed.

For Saskia and Juan, what would normally be an act of mercy has become an every day occurrence…. they simply do not have the resources to take any more dogs, not even one. This is a heartbreaking situation.

The shelter has become so overcrowded that the dogs are fighting with each other. They can barely afford to feed all these dogs, they need more veterinary medicines to cope with the enormous number of dogs they are trying to help.

They need help finding homes and foster families to begin reducing the huge number of galgos and other dogs.

Any publicity, cash donations, any help at all that can be given, let’s get it done.

Please forward this message to any individual or association who might be able to make a difference to the dogs at Acogida de San Anton, especially with adoption help.

Saskia can be emailed in English, Spanish or Dutch: saskiariniavannauta@hotmail.com

Very Best Wishes from the ever Hopeful
