Windows Vista, Windows 7

New Boy doesn’t arrive until tomorrow, but when he does he’ll be wearing Windows Vista. Now, the very very very nice man at Boulanger (as opposed to the rude man with the face like a kugelsack at Planete Saturn), said that at installation I can select my own choice of language from Vista. Does that sound right? It’s no big problem if not, I can manage an OS in French, but in the mother-tongue would be preferable. So if you know the answer, be kind enough to share it. :-)

Another question: Is Vista as horrible as so many people claim?

Here’s another one: M. Kugelsackface said that Windows 7 will be available for free download for computers bought after 30th June. M. Niceman said he didn’t know the answer, but thought Windows 7 was only for use with touchscreens.  Is that right?

If not (because New Boy doesn’t have a touchscreen), is Windows 7 a good idea?

Be a nice geek and give me some advice here. :-)

  1. I have no clue about computers. My husband says Vista is as bad as they say – he just loaded Windows 7 on one of the machines at home – it is pretty, but I am such a low-key user!

    • Can you ask him if Windows 7 works on all computers, not just those with touchscreens? If it’s pretty, that’s a good start. :-)

  2. I have no idea about computers either, but we run windows in French because when we tried to install it in English it proved incompatable with our Livebox. We had no internet until we finally realised about three days later, though this did mean that we got more work done than usual.

I would like to know whether a kugelsack is the same as a kloetsak?

    • We don’t have a Livebox, never could get the thing to work in any language, but have a router instead, so that shouldn’t be a problem.

Re. the kugelsack/kloetsak question, I think the answer is “yes”, but check with Bruno to be certain. He’s the man. :D

  3. hmm. I bought a computer two years ago and actually reformatted the thing to take off vista after a few weeks. incessant security warnings, alwys connecting to the microsoft site, every time i did anything they tried to sell me some update or new service. i felt my computer was no longer mine(- just a tool for bringing advertizing to me faster. it also didnt like my MP3s which were actually taken off my own cd collction or field recordings. They seem to assume at microsoft that evrybody is a music pirate.

I tried playing legal DVDs I bought overseas, no hope. I tried playing legal copies of DVDs that a friend made for me (she MADE the films herself, a film company) and it wouldnt let me play them.

complete waste of money and it invalidated my guarantee, once i uninstalled it.

    • Yikes, that sounds really bad.

Maybe it’s improved over the last two years, she says, hopefully. ;-)

  4. OK – my husband says – during installation you can choose the language.
Windows 7 is coming out for retail in October. We have a test version /the one that is tested for glitches/. In October you can upgrade to Windows 7 – but only to a version which corresponds to the level of Vista you have. For example – if you have Vista business – you get Windows 7 business. Windows 7 is for any computers with or without touchscreen.
